Season of Darkness and Possibility

Years ago when some friends invited us to go rafting, I thought our three-year-old son, would be thrilled. But instead, he evidenced fear.

A few questions revealed the truth. “I’m scared of those rabbits, Mommy.”

“Rabbits?”

“Yeah. Evelyn said we’d come to some rabbits…”

Those rapids would’ve scared me, too, if I thought they’d hop up at me. After a bit of explanation, our son loved our afternoon of rafting.

Misunderstandings often ground our fears. My latest World War II heroine experiences this. Because the war has already stolen her beau at Pearl Harbor, Glenora has said good-bye to romance.

Now the war may also have taken her little brother, and she fears the worst. Christmas 1944 overflowed with worry—would the Navy notify them of her brother’s death when a typhoon struck his ship, or send news of his rescue?

It’s tough to stay positive in times like these, but Hank, a recovering wounded warrior now working at Glenora’s father’s garage, says they should never give up. Besides that, he has such a gentle way with her father when his heart begins acting up, and she’s beginning to rely on him…

Sometimes rabbits turn out to be a few harmless rapids.

The problem is, we can’t see around the bend. But we’ve all experienced the joy of outcomes far different than we’d expected—and different can mean wonderful.

In this advent season of darkness and possibility, I hope this old-fashioned World War II romance warms readers’ hearts.

Gail, thank you for sharing this sweet story about your son with us. My mind instantly went to imaging the terrifying, horrible rabbit from Monty Python. Now that’s a rabbit to be scared of! But seriously, you are so right that misunderstandings often ground our fears. I know it has happened to me a lot!
